All About Us

We are the oldest honey company in the state of Colorado!

My great grandfather Walter began this sweet family tradition on his Colorado homestead back in 1908. We’ve come a long way from selling honey off the back of a wagon in his front yard!

Collectively, over the past 110 years, our family has produced millions of pounds of sweet golden goodness for our loyal customers. Four generations, and countless bee stings later, this sticky business is still our passion!

The Sweetest Family Tradition for Four Generations

My great grandfather, Walter Leckenby, was one of the earliest beekeepers in Colorado and began this family legacy back in 1908!

My grandfather, Arthur Johnston, ran bees the way they were supposed to be run. He was an extremely hard worker and a very particular man. In fact, to quote the Colorado Dept of Health, he had “one of the cleanest operations in the state.”  People drove from all corners of the state and beyond just to buy his honey. Even President Kennedy couldn’t resist stopping in for a visit on his way to Dallas in 1962! Arthur and my Granny Louise raised 4 boys who would inherit the same fascination of bees.

My father, Lyle Johnston, has been a pioneer in the bee industry for over 40 years now! At one time, he ran just under 4,000 hives across 10 different states. He is also one of the largest bee suppliers in the state of California contributing 60,000 hives to the almond pollination every year! He’s kind of a big deal, but to me, he’s still just my dorky Dad!

When I was younger, I was forced to work at our honey house as punishment for back-talking or breaking curfew. Now, I happily do the same work to earn a living! I am the first female beekeeper in my family tree and am happy to carry on our proud family tradition.
